About Allotments for Schools

It is important that young people are given the opportunity to see firsthand how their food is grown. They need to understand the impact of the seasons and climate change, the ways that nature supports the growing process, and importance of the preservation of water.
From early years there are opportunities for schools to build practical activities into the curriculum to support this understanding.
We understand that teachers are busy with many priorities, and money is short. Our remit is to make it as easy as possible for primary schools to embrace our vision. There will be no charge for this support.
Allotments for Schools also champions community, bringing together allotment societies, volunteers and the wider community, so they can effectively support their local primary school. Wellbeing is vital at every stage of life, and what could be better than spending time outside, meeting like-minded people whilst helping young people to develop an understanding and passion for growing their own food.
During 2026 we consulted with schools, allotment associations and the wider community, to understand what is needed and identify any constraints. In 2027 we will launch as a project, starting with schools in the north east of Leeds. We will also embed systems, and promote our vision more widely, preparing to increase the offering to other areas of Leeds. Over time we would like to expand our offering beyond Leeds and to include older children. This however will require funding, and we first need to prove concept. Any help you can give will be appreciated.
